I started with the pattern "Pin-up Girls Classic bra" and a fabric kit and then just followed instructions.
It turned out beautiful (ie the actual sewing turned out well). The size was a tad too small, unfortunately, and the style...Well, it's classic allright, granny style!! However it does offer great support compared to many on the market.
Here are some pictures!
impeccable sewing on that bra! I'm impressed :) I'm too afraid to try to sew one.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Now that I've tried - you have to too! ;-) No, seriously though. The sewing wasn't nearly as hard as you might think. I think the challenge is really about getting the perfect fit and learning how to alter the patterns. It was fun!
DeleteThis is super... I too found that my first few were a little tight as the same pattern will vary depending on the tension of the fabric. A bit granny...? How about thinking of it as a classic design, like that used by the great Hollywood legends of the forties and fifties...? You can always use one of your favourite but worn out bras, unpick it and draw a pattern from that!
ReplyDeletePS - I still owe you a proper reply on email. Just a little manic here at the moment!
Yes, I'll try to keep the retro style in my head when wearing this! The comfort will overrule any sort of sexiness any day, but I think the idea to unpick an old one is great. I'll do that, I think. What is your favourite pattern?
Deleteawesome! sewing bras is so much fun! you did an amazing job. the fit looks really good, i think. i imagine you feel its too small in the band, as the cups fit really nicely, but a snug band is crucial for good support. i also started my bra-making journey with the classic bra, and quickly realised that the wide straps are mostly to blame for the granny look. it's super easy to simply omit them and use elastic straps instead, wich is what i did here : http://www.thehandstitchedfiles.blogspot.se/2014/08/100-followers-giveaway-and-my-second.html also, have you seen orange lingerie's marlborough bra pattern? much sexier :) let's conquer the next frontier of sewing!
ReplyDeleteYes!!! I am dying to try the Marlborough pattern too! I have told myself that I should make this pattern perfect first though. It is so easy to become a "pattern hopper" and never get through the actual alteration business, I think. I really like the engineering part of things (geek, I know) and see every problem as a challenge :-)
DeleteI am working on my second bra right now with slightly altered cups and omitting the wide straps, like you suggested. Fingers crossed!
Hi,
ReplyDeletePlease forgive my leaving this in a comment, I couldn’t find an e-mail address for you.I recently made a list of bloggers who sew bras, in order to make them easier to find. You can find it at http://iammsfrizzle.blogspot.com/2014/10/bra-sewing-bloggers-by-size.html I hope you don’t mind being on it, please let me know if you want to be removed. Thank you!
